Dave Sexton stood in stark contrast to the brash, larger-than-life football managers of his era. A reserved and thoughtful individual, he emerged as one of the most innovative and forward-thinking coaches of his time, achieving remarkable success with the London clubs he helmed, Chelsea (1967-74) and Queens Park Rangers (1974-77), as well as with the England Under-21 team and the Football Association's School of Excellence at Lilleshall, where he served as the inaugural technical director.<\/p>
<\/p>
After departing from Chelsea, Sexton joined Queens Park Rangers in 1974. At a club with limited prior major triumphs, he had the latitude to shape a team that embodied his football philosophy more closely. In his second season at the helm, a period that marked QPR's most illustrious team and season, they secured second place in the league.<\/p>
A disciple of Rinus Michels and the Dutch \"total football\" philosophy, Sexton adopted a fluid and technically sophisticated system. This approach allowed all ten outfield players to interchange positions rapidly, optimising spatial dynamics on the field. Sexton's commitment to this style was evident as he would occasionally travel to the Netherlands at his own expense to observe matches. At QPR, he inherited a talented squad featuring future England captain Gerry Francis, the mercurial Stan Bowles, and Frank McLintock, while also recruiting Don Masson. He cultivated a disciplined and aesthetically pleasing style of play that was ahead of its time, emphasising the significance of nutrition, fitness, and meticulous video analysis.<\/p>
<\/p>
During the memorable 1975-76 season, the team's innovative brand of football caught the league off guard. They remained undefeated at home and delivered a stunning 5-1 victory over reigning champions Derby, with Bowles netting a hat-trick. Despite their impressive campaign, they narrowly missed out on the title to Liverpool by a single point on the final day of the season. The subsequent year saw QPR advance to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup but finish in 14th place in the league.
